Shinai Workshop

*FREE INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING!*

The Tozando Group was recently pleased to open one of Japan's first specialist Shinai Workshops. Located by Kyoto's famous Heian Jingu, and the Kendo 'Mecca' that is the Butokuden, visitors are met by our expert Shinai craftsman, Mr. Manabu Akutsu. Mr. Akutsu was originally a professional violin maker, and was well known in Japan for the quality of his craftsmanship.

Until now, the chance to select the size, shape and materials of one's own Shinai has been reserved for those living in Japan, only being made possible by complicated and expensive links to Japanese-speaking Kendo Shops.

"When I first visited the Workshop, and met Mr. Akutsu I was astounded by the choice available to Japanese Kendoka in terms of Shinai. I was able to choose everything I wanted, and for a good price too... This kind of choice had rarely been made available to me whilst living in Europe, and when it occasionally was, it came at a huge price. I decided to make it my goal to offer this service to all international customers, through Miyako Kendogu. It is my firm belief that all Kendoka should have the chance to choose the equipment they want, so it has been my aim to make as many choices available as I could. Having said that, if there is still more you wish to specify, simply get in touch with us, and we will advise you of what further options you have!" - Andy Fisher, Miyako Kendogu.

*Please note - If you select the Shikumi option the Shinai is supplied assembled with all leather parts and Tsuru.

PRODUCTION TIME : As each of these deluxe Shinai are crafted by our expert craftsman, Mr. Akutsu, please allow approx 3 weeks for delivery.

Very good shinai February 20, 2011
Reviewer: Nikoley Koch from Duesseldorf, NRW Germany
I ordered two large grip koto dzukuri with keichiku bamboo and shikumi to give it a try.

Delivery was really fast and with good service. I can firmly say the best shinai I had so far and I had a lot in over 24 years of kendo. The grip is 30mm which is not specified in the shop. So be aware of that. I allready suggested to add more choice regarding center of gravity and combinations of grip styles.

Kyoto Madake Oval Koto October 22, 2010
Reviewer: Ken from United States
This product is pretty much a Nihonto when you close your eyes. Everything is perfect, even down to the small details of the engraving. Recommended to those that can afford it.

Short Grip Dobari Jissengata August 20, 2010
Reviewer: Wally Chamsay from Pasig City, Metro Manila Philippines
Tried the shinai in class and was very impressed by the quality. My Japanese senpai told me that these type of shinai are starting to get popular in Japan because the shorter grip makes it easier to handle and allows you to straighten both arms when you hit without extending your right shoulder.

The service of Miyako Kendogu was excellent (same day confirmation of my order) and the "Free International Shipping" turned out to be UPS Express Delivery which was a very pleasant surprise for me.

I plan to buy more products from them in the future.

Reviewer: Lewis Gale from Cardiff, South Glamorgan United Kingdom
The options available on this product are brilliant. You can vary from a good quality shinai to a top quality product that dominates the market in terms of quality and performance. The support I recieved was excellent and my madake shinai is the best I've ever seen or used. Quality worth every penny.
