Description

This Jissengata Kotozukuri Shinai has its weight and balance distributed more evenly along its length. This makes it feel slightly more tip-heavy than a regular or Dobari style Shinai, catering for players who like to take strong control of their opponent's centre line and make convincing single strikes. As this is Jissengata this model is suited to tournament players who prefer the balance of a Kotozukuri Shinai.

"This Shinai is very much like a couple of Kotozukuri Shinai that the former coach of the British Team gave me, before returning to Japan a few years ago. He was an amazing Shiai player, though he often preferred to use Kotozukuri Shinai. This puzzled me somewhat, until I tried one out!" - Andy Fisher, Miyako Kendogu

Koudaiji

Kodai takes it's name from Kodai-ji Temple in Higashiyama, Kyoto. It was established by the widow of Toyotomi Hideyoshi to pray for her dead husband. The temple contains a portrait of Toyotomi Hideyoshi which is considered an Important Cultural Asset of Japan.

IMPORTANT
The Consumer Product Safety Association (CPSA) in Japan specializes in the quality control of potentially dangerous consumer goods. Only quality assured products are allowed to bear the SG Mark, which meet the Japanese government standards in line with Consumer Product Safety Law. Unlike other quality assurance stickers found on Shinai, the SG Mark is not awarded from a collective group of Kendogu manufacturers and retailers, rather it is a government approved seal that ensures products have met strict legal quality standards.

As well as on Shinai, the SG Mark can be found on various products which have the potential to endanger human life - including bicycles, baby carriers, motorcycle helmets, climbing equipment and much more. For official information (PDF) about the SG Mark and the CPSA click here.

"Never have a favourite weapon!" December 15, 2011
Reviewer: Steve Bishop from Edinburgh, Midlothian United Kingdom
Preferring not to use dobari shinai, it is often tricky to find a well-balanced koto style shinai from suppliers for regular practice- outside of visiting a bogu shop in person.
It goes without saying that durability and price (value for money) are the next most important factors.

For the last year or so I have been using up my "Frankenstein" shinai, which while challenging my ability to adapt and cope a variety of weight and balance, has been  frustrating to say the least.
Since using the Jissengata Kotozukuri shinai I have been enjoying my keiko again! I may have found a favourite weapon!

PS: I have bought two more since this review!
