Custom Made Kendo no Kata Mogito
Until now, custom made Japanese swords have been available only to Iaidoka. However, for the first time, this individualized service is now easily available to the Kendo practitioner too.
"Most Kata swords on the market at the moment are made in Japan by the same manufacturer. They feature a sand-cast zinc-alloy blade, which although stronger than a standard Iaito, has been known to break suddenly when used for the Kendo no Kata. Also, the customer's options have been extremely limited on those swords, making true customization impossible.
As the sword was said to be 'soul' of the warrior, I felt it was a requirement for the modern Kenshi to be able to select 'their own' personalized piece, as oppose to a mass-produced sword which features little or no individuality.
Even in Japan, truly customizable Mogito, which is suitable for Kendo no Kata use are not widely available. Because of this, we contacted one of the country's best sword makers and asked them to specially produce a new sword for use in the Kendo no Kata. A sample was made and sent to my office, and immediately I decided we had to offer it to the international market.
Naturally, the specially developed, super-strong alloy core of the blade results in the sword being heavier than an equivalent sized Iaito. Though, after asking some local Iaido experts to examine it, they assured me it was the similar weight to a Shinken (real sword) of the same length/specification. Obviously the blade is without a sharp edge.
